Key Challenges

This £89m development posed several design challenges with varying contours on both internal walls and the external facades elevations.
Through group collaboration, British Gypsum was in a great position to offering solutions for both and incorporated the newly launched Glasroc X Product. In addition, the building required both flat and curved external profiling with the product AND had to meet a client/architect requirement of a double layer.
As the partner of choice, British Gypsum was able to collaborate internally and provide a ‘tested solution’ at very short notice, offering all stakeholders an innovative product, within an innovative solution, whilst demonstrating incredible agility for the project’s needs.

Key Achievements

The key to the successful securing of the project was two-fold. Firstly, working in design partnership with both the architect and main contractor design teams as part of the MCFA framework. Secondly, and more key, was the agility in providing a tested solution with the double layer curved Glasroc X solution at very short notice.

This was a solution that didn’t exist when the building was originally designed. Between the commercial and technical teams ‘on the ground’ and the wider British Gypsum framework team, a timescale of arranging components, booking a suitable test facility and achieving the required results in less than 4 weeks is almost unheard of. This was a great innovative solution in a truly collaborative manner.

The interchange is an extremely complex, challenging and multi-layered project that, once complete, will provide a modern, innovative and truly mixed-use set of environments. Not only will it deliver Cardiff’s new bus and coach station, but it will provide a landmark residential offer in a key city centre location and dynamic new office accommodation. We are delighted to have the opportunity to implement our designs in partnership with Rightacres and ISG in a scheme that fuses so many vital elements of the city together and is the final piece of the Central Square regeneration development.
