Project description

The project comprises a new car park to serve Mina Zayed, Abu Dhabi’s central port for more than 40 years, and now an increasingly popular tourist destination.
Located in the center of the Mina Zayed Souk, the building accommodates more than 500 cars over two levels, and incorporates the latest smart parking technology, ensuring a fast and easy parking experience for visitors.
An attractive façade, punctured with a regular pattern of traditional Islamic horseshoe arches, hides an aesthetically appealing interior, designed to create an attractive first impression for visitors.

Key Challenges

Structural Load Management: Designing a metal framework to withstand high wind and live loads while maintaining a maximum system weight of 50 kg.
Unexpected Deflection Requirements: Meeting unusual head deflection demands from consultants after design completion, requiring a custom-engineered detail to avoid wastage of pre-produced metal frames.
Complex Junction Design: Creating and installing a junction between Pseudo Column & Beam without a background structure for support.
Precision Arch Installation: Ensuring high-accuracy arch installation within a tight project timeline, addressed by developing special bottom channels to maintain precision.

Key Achievements

Delivered a structural solution that matched the architect’s concept with no visible joints on the façade.
Successfully integrated all systems with minimal joints, earning final approval from the architect.
Developed a self-supporting cross-junction between columns and beams, a first-time structural design achievement.
Created special joint termination and deflection head details in collaboration with installers for optimized performance.
Received client and consultant appreciation for Saint-Gobain’s technical expertise and the installer’s rapid execution, completing the project ahead of schedule despite initial delays in façade design and system selection.

Sustainability in the project

Implemented a lightweight drywall system, marking a pioneering initiative by the Semi-Government Authority.
Achieved a lower environmental impact by replacing traditional blockwork with drywall systems, significantly minimizing concrete usage in the main structure.
Promoted sustainability with a substantial reduction in water consumption compared to conventional construction methods.
Reduced transportation emissions by sourcing materials from Gyproc & Weber factories located within 50 km of the project site.
