St. Catherine of Siena

Canada CanadaContractors: P.J.Daly Contracting Limited

Project description

St. Catherine of Siena is the first new Catholic Church constructed in Hamilton in over 40 years. The church stands 28.0m (92 ft) high and is divided into three parts: the natural limestone base, the aluminum composite mid-band, and topped with a diamond-tiled geometric roof. As an initial design move, the church was centred on the site to create a strong sense of balance. To further strengthen the axis, key elements sacred to the church align in a peaceful progression from exterior to interior: from the Holy Shrine that anchors the landscape pedestrian boulevard, Narthex and multi-use Parish Hall, Baptismal Font, Nave, Altar, and finally to the Reredos.

Key Challenges

  • Challenge: Constructing the interior partition walls were extremely complex due to the high and various angles. Metal framing sub-structure extends to 47 ft. A large majority of the project required working from high with lifts due to the sloping and curved ceilings.
  • Time: This church combined 2 old churches that were closing. Timing was critical since both properties were being sold to fund the new church being built.
  • Supply Issues: There were constant material shortages due to the high demand coming out of covid and we were still able to complete the project on time.

Key Achievements

  • Sound Testing: A sound engineer had to visit the site once it was complete to test the site for sound quality.
  • Relationship Building with the Diocese of Hamilton
  • Project completed on time
  • Providing a new place of worship (first new Catholic in 40yrs in Hamilton)
