The University of Liverpool’s new world-class teaching experience
The Yoko Ono Lennon Centre is the new home of the University of Liverpool Arts and Humanities school. The main features of the building are the remarkable Tung Auditorium with its 400-seat performance space as well as the Paul Brett Lecture theatre which is the largest purpose-built lecture space on the University Campus.
Bluegyp has taken great pride in completing the installation of the SFS, drylining, suspended ceilings, and interior finishes to this eye-catching building. The installation has included a full British Gypsum specification which incorporated the demanding acoustic requirements of the building as per the brief from our clients.
The state of art teaching and performance centre opened in March 2022 as the University’s newest world-class teaching experience. The city of Liverpool is globally renowned for its rich and diverse music history, which reaches back to the 18th century. Because of this students travel from across the globe to study music at the University. A high-quality performance space was therefore at the heart of the client’s vision when providing a brief for this project.

- Acoustics in the Tung Auditorium
From tender through to completion the project had high requirements for acoustics. Bluegyp worked with ULCCO, Ellis Williams Architects and British Gypsum to offer technical advice to develop the acoustic strategy.
- Coffered ceiling and walls in the auditorium.
Intricate setting out of MF ceiling in an 8m high room. Change in level to MF ceilings required additional MF5 and MF7 components to be used, as well as different lengths of FEA1. Bluegyp used highly skilled operatives to undertake these works and a thorough quality assessment of all works from first fix to handover, which included pictures, drawings and client signatures.
- Intricate bespoke detailing within the system
This made the tender process and quality check a challenge to ensure we priced all details correctly as well as installed as per specification. This was very important to ensure the walls and ceilings met the fire and acoustic requirements.
- Loading materials out due to small site
This challenge meant that we required specialist plans. Our supplier had to provide smaller loads of materials at a time, to ensure we could load it all in, this meant more intensive labour on site. Due to our good working relationships with suppliers, they were happy to work with us to ensure we got the materials on site that we needed.
- Obstructions preventing vertical installation of MF ceilings
Due to the nature of the electrical installations and coffered ceiling, some areas of the MF required a secondary double GypCeiling system to overcome these areas and maintain the fire-resistant properties of the ceilings.
- Close collaboration between British Gypsum, Bluegyp, Ellis Williams and ULCCO
- Willingness to go over and above for our client in relation to the detailing to the auditorium for acoustic and fire requirements
- FIS award winner 2022 in the Drylining Category
- Our package was delivered on time and on budget
- Satisfied long-standing client with a commendation email received following completion
The tendering procurement process has been very clear and encapsulating of all requirements including Specialist Fire Detailing. Their quality of work has been exceptional both logistically and installation of product, providing detailed records for audit traceability for maintenance purposes.
I would fully recommend them as a quality specialist installer in their field.
