Biohome Canarias

SpainSpainCompany Name: TECNOPLAC SOLUCIONES TERMO-ACÚSTICAS

Project description

Biohome Canarias is the first home in a sustainable modular building project. It incorporates within its bioclimatic design innovative building solutions, taking advantage of the natural resources from the area and reducing the impact of the building on its surroundings. Its modular design is based on the same shipping containers used to transport the building materials. There they are lined and insulated with Placo solutions for ceilings, walls and façade, obtaining a high performance energy-efficient home. Its design seeks to achieve low energy demand. It incorporates simple improvements based on bioclimatic architecture and powerful thermal insulation in its lining, reducing CO2 emissions by 95% with respect to the usual construction model. Furthermore, the optimized design of the home using dry construction solution considerably reduces the generation of site waste. It reduces it to 5% of its normal volume and allows the subsequent separate collection and recycling of waste, reducing the environmental impact.

Contractor

TECNOPLAC SOLUCIONES TERMO-ACÚSTICAS

Tecnoplac solutiones -acústicas was born about 15 years ago as a plasterers company. In their quest to satisfy their customers, and working with the best materials on the market, year after year, it has been consolidating and specializing in the assembly of drywall. It puts special emphasis on comfort, energy saving and sustainability. They specialize in offering high quality finishes .

Benefits
Term cost
Cost of bioHOME house €105K < Cost of traditional house €132K, - 20% in costs
Interior thermal insulation
Incorporated simple improvements and powerful thermal insulation in its lining, reducing CO2 emissions by 95% compared to the usual construction method. Placotherm V – used in exterior façade cladding
Recycling certified
The optimised design of the home using dry construction solution, considerably reduced the generation of site waste to 5% of its normal volume
Acoustic insulation
The interior of the home is clad with Placo plasterboard (Placo Phonique)
Environmentally friendly
It takes advantage of the natural resources and it provides a significant reduction in the volume of construction waste generation

Key Achievements

  • Good relationship/cooperation within the team bioHOME
  • Adaptation of Placo systems within the bioclimatic design of the home
  • Design and construction with low environmental impact on surroundings
  • Design standards above the current technical requirements for the sustainable construction and use of a home located in Lanzarote, a UNESCO Biosphere reserve since 1993.
  • The result is a high performance building, with reduced costs and completion times, and a functional, modern, contemporary design.

Key Challenges

The main challenge for the bioHOME Canaries project was to build a high-performance home, optimising the use of construction materials, including the shipping containers necessary to transport these materials to the Canary Islands. We included innovative solutions and dry construction, which facilitated rapid, precise construction which was almost free from waste. It is a home which had a low environmental impact during its construction phase and will continue to have during its subsequent lifespan thanks to its high energy efficiency and bioclimatic design, also reducing costs. The home was completed in a very short time frame, only 180 days. Results: a) Cost of bioHOME house €105K < Cost of traditional house €132K, – 20% in costs; b) – 95% in CO2 emissions compared to a conventional home; c) – 95% in CO2 emissions compared to a conventional home. The optimised design of the home using dry construction solution considerably reduced the generation of site waste to 5% of its normal volume.
